Lagos United Lions club on the 16th of July 2024 successfully conducted a comprehensive outreach program at Sijuade nursery and primary School Surulere Lagos, focusing on cholera prevention and tree planting as a means of environmental
conservation. The event began with a sensitization lecture, where members of the club educated students on the importance of maintaining a clean environment and simple hygiene practices to prevent the spread of cholera. Posters portraying simple steps and good hygiene practices to stop the spread of the disease were placed strategically around the school and community as reminder.

Following the lecture, the club organized a tree-planting session, where students and teachers joined club members in planting various tree species, including pear, moringa, and palm trees. This hands-on activity not only beautified the school surroundings but also taught the students about the significance of trees in maintaining a healthy environment.
Tree planting is crucial for several environmental, social, and economic reasons:

1. Combat Climate Change
Trees absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and store carbon, helping to mitigate the greenhouse effect and reduce the impact of climate change.

2. Improve Air Quality
Trees filter pollutants from the air, including sulfur dioxide, ammonia, and nitrogen oxides. They also produce oxygen, improving air quality and promoting better health.

3. Prevent Soil Erosion
Tree roots bind the soil, reducing the risk of erosion caused by wind and water. This also helps maintain soil fertility and protects water bodies from sedimentation.

4. Enhance Biodiversity
Trees provide habitats for a wide variety of animals, birds, and insects, contributing to the biodiversity of ecosystems. Forests support a rich variety of plant and animal life.

5. Regulate Water Cycles
Trees help regulate the water cycle by absorbing rainfall, reducing surface runoff, and promoting groundwater recharge. This prevents flooding and maintains water quality in rivers and lakes.

6. Cool Urban Areas
Trees in urban settings help reduce the “urban heat island” effect by providing shade and cooling the surrounding environment through evapotranspiration. This reduces the need for air conditioning and energy consumption.

7. Improve Mental Health
Spending time in green spaces, particularly around trees, has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Trees in parks and neighborhoods create aesthetically pleasing environments that promote relaxation and well-being.

Through this initiative, Lagos United Lions Club was able to empower the students with knowledge and skills to promote a healthier and more sustainable community. The club believes that by working together with various establishment and organizations, we can make a positive impact on the lives of the youths and community and create a better future for generations to come.
