Lion Engr. Hamed Olugbenga Babajide Lawal, from Ikorodu, Nigeria, was elected to serve a two-year term as director of Lions International at the association’s 92nd International Convention, held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, July 6 through 10, 2009.

Past Director Lawal is an honorary life vice president and past president of Ikorodu Chamber of Commerce and Industry. A 1972 graduate of the Elite Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Department of Civil Engineering, he also is a managing director/chief executive officer in the civil engineering industry.

A member of the Ikorodu Doyen Lions Club since 1982, Past Director Lawal has held many offices within Lions International, including club charter president, district governor, chairman of several committees, and member of Presidential Mission 30, Presidential Team 20K, and Presidential Steering Committee on Africa. He also served as faculty for the All Africa Conference, Lions Forum of India, South Asia, Africa and Middle East (ISAME). Past Director Lawal was appointed to a three-year term as trustee for Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) in 2023-2024.

In recognition of his service to the association, he has received numerous awards, including an Appreciation Award for Charter President, Lion of the Year Award, two Achievement Awards, Lion of the Decade Award, three Merit Awards, four Appreciation Awards, Best Region Chairman Award, Pillar of Service Award, Distinguished Service Award, Passion For Service Award, Everyday Heroes Award, DG Excellence Award, Recognition Award, 11 International President’s Appreciation Awards and the Ambassador of Good Will Award, the highest honor the association bestows upon its members. He also is a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow, a Second Century Ambassador of Lions Clubs International and a Humanitarian Partner of LCIF.

Past International Director Lawal is a fellow of the Nigerian Lions Charity Foundation in the Sapphire cadre. He served as a Constitutional Area Leader with Africa’s Global Membership Team and was integral to founding Constitutional Area VIII in 2019. He also served as a member of LCIF’s CA VIII International Committee during Campaign 100 and held the position of LCIF CA VIII Constitutional Area Leader in the year following Campaign 100, before becoming an LCIF Trustee.

In addition to his Lions activities, Past Director Lawal is active in numerous professional and community organizations. He is currently a member of the Ijebu Muslim College Old Students Association (IMCOSA), the Babalaje of Egbe Bobajolu (Okunrin) of Ijebu land and Vice President of Ikorodu Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In the past, he has served as president of IMCOSA, chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers, chairman of the Board of Governors of Ijebu Muslim College, Lord Mayor, a Fellow of Ijebu-Ode Metropolitan Club and Chairman of the club’s business venture – Metro Arena Board of Directors.

Past Director Lawal has two sons, one daughter and six grandchildren.
