Ilupeju Diamond Lions Club’s recently in conjunction with the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Mushin Division, in celebration of the international youth day had a public lecture for the youths.
The youths of Mushin and its environs were lectured on the importance of studying labeled products like canned food, beverages, drinks etc. before consumption. They were also lectured on the basic principles of First Aid treatment for resuscitation.
Studying labeled products like canned food, beverages, and drinks before consumption is crucial for several reasons:
- Nutritional Information
Health awareness: Labels provide details on calories, fats, sugar, sodium, and other nutrients. This information helps individuals make healthier choices based on dietary needs.
Allergy information: Labels indicate potential allergens like nuts, gluten, soy, or dairy, which is critical for those with food allergies or sensitivities.
- Ingredients
Avoid harmful substances: Labels list ingredients, helping consumers avoid harmful additives, preservatives, or chemicals.
Dietary preferences: For vegetarians, vegans, or those following specific diets (e.g., keto, gluten-free), reading labels ensures the product meets their needs.
- Expiration and Safety
Expiry date: Checking the expiration date ensures the product is safe to consume and prevents food poisoning.
Storage instructions: Proper storage information helps maintain product safety and quality, preventing spoilage.
- Additives and Preservatives
Artificial substances: Labels reveal whether the product contains artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners that some consumers prefer to avoid for health reasons.
Sodium and sugar content: High levels of sodium or sugar in processed foods can contribute to health problems like hypertension, diabetes, or obesity.
- Sustainability and Ethical Concerns
Eco-friendly packaging: Labels sometimes indicate whether the packaging is recyclable or eco-friendly.
Ethical sourcing: Some labels disclose whether ingredients are sourced sustainably or certified as fair trade, important for consumers concerned about environmental and social issues.
- Regulatory Compliance
Certifications: Labels show if a product is certified organic, non-GMO, or gluten-free, which reassures consumers about the quality and safety of the product based on government or industry standards.
By studying the labels, consumers can make informed decisions, avoid health risks, and choose products that align with their values and dietary needs.
